Songs For the Spring
The way 2025 is going so far, it’s been such a strong year for music. You have alot of big names such as Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and Lady Gaga, dropping some of their best songs this year, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg. Tens of thousands of songs are released on streaming platforms every day, and it’s so hard to listen to all of them. It’s hard to even find out about some of my favorite acts like Samia or Tennis dropping music because of the vast amount put out every week, so what about new artists trying to establish themselves?
It’s pretty depressing getting your foot in the door in the music industry with social media just giving you an endless supply of content and with attention spans getting shorter now than ever, it’s hard to get new listeners and capture their attention in so little time. I'll keep doing my best to listen to as much new music as humanly possible, and I wanted to shine some light on some tracks from a few indie artists that caught my ear.
“Juno” by Glenna Jane
This song is a saccharine sapphic anthem about blurring platonic and romantic love and loving your friends and falling in love with your friends. It's reminiscent of the 2000s romcom–a sleepover scene of the girl next door kissing her best friend. Although the song does mention the late 1990s romantic thriller Cruel Intentions, this song is pretty sweet. Am I biased because it mentions my favorite Vampire Weekend song “Hannah Hunt” in the first line of the song? Yeah. This doesn’t make it not a bop, nonetheless. It’s a nostalgic song that reminds you of when you were younger and coming-of-age, and I can’t wait to hear more from Glenna.
“Heartbreak Getaway” by Sara King
I hear a banger when I hear one, and that is exactly what Sara King put out earlier this month. A story of heartache, distraction, femininity, and freedom as it immediately immerses the listener into a scene of running away, desperately seeking the pulse and allure of a night out in an unfamiliar city. I don’t know how you cannot help but dance to this song. I really like the retro vibe from the music video as well.
“Second Best” by Mia Lorelei
San Diego’s very own Mia Lorelei is back and with her first single of 2025. A new year, a new her, and this track is a new chapter in the book of Mia. I really fuck with the music video and believe it or not, she directed the music video herself. Not everyone can be a sports star turned rock star, but if anyone can do it, it’s Mia. The guitars on the song are so damn good, and I can’t wait to hear what Mia has in store for us next.
“TNT” by Chloe Star
There seems to be a running trend of artists fleeing California to New York City because this is exactly what Persian/Indigenous singer Chloe Star is as well. “TNT” is a much different track from the rest of the songs we’ve reviewed, though, with the name of the song being pretty self-explanatory. This song is loud and chaotic but in all the best ways possible. Long story short, this is a banger and it slaps. A must-listen.
“All that!” by Lauren Juzang
Vietnamese/Creole artist Lauren Juzang is back and better than ever. With her opening up for Jensen McRae in a few days from when this article was written, she blessed all her future fans with this song. The song is all about her wanting to make a change for herself, and i’m with her. It’s spring-cleaning time and out with the old and in with the new. The song is so hopeful and really resonates with the season of Spring. This is my first time listening to one of her songs, and she already has me hooked. I’m really hoping she reads this and drops more songs!!
